STAFF BOOK PICK - OCTOBER 2022

We are often asked what we recommend reading while at Esalen. For the first time, we are proudly sharing our Staff Book Pick. Let the adventures begin!

Inspired by a profound experience swimming with wild dolphins off the coast of Maui, Susan Casey set out on a quest to learn everything she could about these creatures. Her journey takes her from a community in Hawaii known as “Dolphinville,” where the animals are seen as the key to spiritual enlightenment, to the dark side of the human-cetacean relationship at marine parks and dolphin-hunting grounds in Japan and the Solomon Islands, to the island of Crete, where the Minoan civilization lived in harmony with dolphins, providing a millennia-old example of a more enlightened coexistence with the natural world. Along the way, Casey recounts the history of dolphin research and introduces us to the leading marine scientists and activists who have made it their life’s work to increase humans’ understanding and appreciation of the wonder of dolphins.

Our beautiful October Staff Book Pick was chosen by the wonderful Tim Hulls, Director of Physical Plant. Tim explains, in his own words, why this book touched his heart and soul and why we needed to feature this very special book.

Tim states,“Voices in the Ocean: A Journey into the Wild and Haunting World of Dolphins is about our troubled relationships with cetacean beings. Communication, community and understanding our own unknown minds by exploring the minds of other creatures in our world, dolphins specifically.”

“I picked up this book expecting to get nothing out of it. I put it down for another and then found when I picked it up again, there was so much there. So much love. As an avid reader it's fantastic and one of the most personally insightful books I’ve read in a while.”

He goes on to say, “My tragic relationship with all creatures comes to heart. We are in this world with so many and so much more than what we know as We.  Can We be understood?  Are there beings unlike us that are understood right here, trying to help in community? In understanding? In communication and community with us? What can we learn from each other?  If together we find out how to learn. Living right here watching so much life out there in this mass of life that we are able to watch.  It makes me wonder, where are We, and where are WE?”

We hope you enjoy this magical book – please do let us know your thoughts!
